Job Shadow Program

Thank you for your interest in the WAVE Foundation at the Newport Aquarium’s Job Shadow Program. A career choice is one of the most important decisions you can make in your life and passion is the difference between having a job or having a career. The Job Shadow Program will give you a peek behind the curtain at the daily life of Aquarium workers. If you are ready, check out the information below and carefully fill out the registration form.

Who can apply? Job shadows are open to students currently in grades 6-adult. Space is limited for this program and slots are filled on a first come, first serve basis. A maximum amount of 15 students can job shadow per date. A completed application and payment will ensure your reserved slot.

What will I experience on a job shadow? During the 3 hour job shadow, you will receive:

  • Behind-the-Scenes tour of Newport Aquarium
  • Discussion on Aquarium-related careers, tips and extension opportunities.
  • Daily hands-on activities performed at Newport Aquarium including: cleaning an exhibit, preparing food, tank feeding, presentation preparation, animal interaction, and water quality analysis.
  • Interaction with aquarium staff members
  • Take home packet including: basic biology, career tips, interview skills and suggestions, and program extension opportunities.

When do job shadows take place at the Aquarium? The WAVE Foundation at Newport Aquarium offers PUBLIC and PRIVATE Job Shadow opportunities.

PUBLIC Job Shadows take place one Tuesday each month from 4-7 PM and one Saturday each month from 8-11 AM.

February Tuesday, February 21st 4-7 PM Saturday, February 11th 8-11 AM
March Tuesday, March 14th 4-7 PM Saturday, March 18th 8-11 AM
April Tuesday, April 18th 4-7 PM Saturday, April 29th 8-11 AM
May Tuesday, May 23rd 4-7 PM Saturday, May 13th 8-11 AM

PRIVATE Job Shadow opportunities can be scheduled if a school group, club, or community program has a minimum of 10 participants. This experience can accommodate up to three additional hours of programming for a maximum total of 6 hours (additional fees applied for additional hours).  The additional experiences will include more Aquarium staff interaction, more time behind the scenes, more time in the exhibit space, and an option for lunch.  Please contact Erin Shultz, Community Outreach Coordinator, at eshultz@wavefoundation.org if you are interested in scheduling a PRIVATE Job Shadow.

Is there a fee? Yes, there is a $30 fee per person. Private Job Shadows may require an additional fee.

What should I bring? Job Shadow participants are encouraged to treat this experience like a professional on a job interview so dress like Newport Aquarium staff (collared shirt, khaki pants, and close toed shoes). Sandals and flip flops are not permitted. Be prepared to make the most of your job shadow by bringing questions you would like to ask, your resume if you have one, and/or a notebook to write down tips and ideas! And of course, don’t forget your camera! Most importantly, bring your enthusiasm and love of learning!

How do I apply? Fill out the attached registration form and send it in with your payment to the address indicated on the form. A confirmation email will be sent to you once your registration and payment have been received.
